What You'll Need

Flat piece of cardboard
Pieces of fabric, felt, or colored paper
Pictures of different zoo/farm animals
Optional: decorative items

Let's Begin

  1. Find pictures of different animals. Start with common animals such as cow, horse, bear and pig.
  2. Print off pictures and cut into 4×4 size. Glue the animal pictures to your board, making sure that you space them out.
  3. Using your fabric, felt or paper, cut  piece slightly bigger (5×5) than your animal picture.  If you wish, you can add a decorative piece to the front of your fabric.
  4. Glue along the top only of your fabric piece to cover your pictures. This will allow your child to lift the flap
  5. Place the board in front of her and watch her play peek-a-boo by lifting the flaps.

Get their brains going, talk to your child, for example…
Talk about what your child observes or ask questions like, “What sound does that animal make?” or “Can you lift the flap?”

CDC Milestones

Curious about your child’s development? All children develop at their own pace, but the Center for Disease Control’s developmental milestones can be a helpful guideline. Here are a few examples:

  • Shows fear in some situations
  • Puts things in a container, takes things out of a container
  • Looks at the right picture or thing when it’s named
  • Explores alone but with parent close by
  • Can follow 1-step verbal commands without any gestures
  • Drinks from a cup
  • Shows more and more independence
  • Knows names of familiar people and body parts
  • Might use one hand more than the other
