Let's Begin
Gather Materials
Sandwich sized baggie
Baby lima beans
Cotton balls
Bowl of water
Masking Tape
Step 1
Start by filling a small bowl part way full of water. Have your child dip their cotton balls into water and place them in their baggie in a row across the bottom of the baggie.
Step 2
Next, have your child add some lima beans to their baggie. Talk about how the beans need some room to grow, so just a few beans to each baggie.
Step 3
Now have your child reclose the baggie making sure the baggies are sealed tight, so they hold in the moisture.
Step 4
Lastly, tape the baggie to a window that receives plenty of sunlight. Watch each day to see how the lima bean grows a small bean plant!

Curious about your child’s development? All children develop at their own pace, but the Center for Disease Control’s developmental milestones can be a helpful guideline. Here are a few examples:
1-year-old
- Shows fear in some situations
- Puts things in a container, takes things out of a container
- Looks at the right picture or thing when it’s named
18-months-old
- Explores alone but with parent close by
- Can follow 1-step verbal commands without any gestures
- Drinks from a cup
2-years-old
- Shows more and more independence
- Knows names of familiar people and body parts
- Might use one hand more than the other
