Grasping Toy
Let's Begin
Gather Materials
5″ embroidery hoop
Various textured and colored ribbon
Masking tape, or other heavy tape
Step 1
Start by unscrewing the metal screw at the top of the embroidery hoop to loosen up the inner hoop to remove it from the outer hoop.
Step 2
Now, lay the strips of ribbon over the outer hoop.
Step 3
Next, take the smaller inner hoop and return it to the outer hoop by pushing it back in place to fit together.
Step 4
Finally, tighten the screw so it holds the ribbon in place between the hoops tightly, and tape around the metal screw to make it safer for little hands to explore. (Note: Always supervise while your child is playing with this grasping toy)
CDC Milestones
Curious about your child’s development? All children develop at their own pace, but the Center for Disease Control’s developmental milestones can be a helpful guideline. Here are a few examples:
1-year-old
- Shows fear in some situations
- Puts things in a container, takes things out of a container
- Looks at the right picture or thing when it’s named
18-months-old
- Explores alone but with parent close by
- Can follow 1-step verbal commands without any gestures
- Drinks from a cup
2-years-old
- Shows more and more independence
- Knows names of familiar people and body parts
- Might use one hand more than the other
